When I originally painted this scene, there was construction going on behind me. Lots of jackhammering and backhoe digging. I loved the scene, but the noise was a huge distraction. It was also a very traffic-y street with a red light, so I frequently had a full street of cars blocking my view. So, I did this toned down version once I got home. State Street, West Columbia, SC- a really cool part of Columbia, SC! I gotta say, Columbia is a much smaller city that Charlotte, NC but it has a much cooler vibe and is much more artsy. I like it a lot! Lots to paint here! PS- that's my car, a Honda Pilot, on the far left.
I enjoy painting landscapes and still life. I prefer to paint directly from life, not photographs. Painting directly on location, called "plein air" painting brings a whole set of challenges like weather, bugs and lugging art equipment around. But, ultimately, I think it makes me a better artist.
I paint with oils and acrylics. I like both mediums for different reasons. I like the rich color with oil paints. With acrylics, I like the fast drying and the ability to layer paint quickly.
I have always loved art and painting. Mostly self taught, I have taken numerous workshops across the US with artist that I admire. Currently I teach a weekly acrylics class at Charlotte Fine Art Gallery in Charlotte, NC.
